Research interests
Mícheál is a Research Fellow in Global Musculoskeletal Ageing in the Global Health and Ageing Research Unit, Bristol Medical School, and an adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Monash University.
His research addresses osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and physical function in older adults in sub-Saharan Africa, working across cohorts in The Gambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. A central theme is the skeletal impact of endemic infectious disease: he has quantified HIV-associated osteoporosis, fracture risk, and trabecular bone deficits in midlife women in Zimbabwe, sex-specific architectural deficits in older adults living with HIV, and is currently synthesising evidence on HIV, tuberculosis, and chronic kidney disease as determinants of poor bone health in ancestrally diverse African populations. He has also examined osteoporosis and sarcopenia prevalence in Gambian older adults, and bone health across the menopausal transition in South African women.
He has a BSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from Trinity College Dublin, and subsequently completed a PhD at MRC Human Nutrition Research (University of Cambridge, 2019) on pregnancy-related bone mineral mobilisation. He has since held posts at the MRC Nutrition and Bone Research Group at the MRC Epidemiology Unit, Population Health Sciences at Bristol Medical School, and Monash University.
